Custom Follow Focus Gear
If no standard gear fits your lens, we make a Follow Focus Gear exactly to your measurements, 3D printed and engraved with your lens name. You can send in your lens or drop it off in person in Augsburg and we take the measurements. Or you measure it yourself, the manual is further down on this page.
Unlike the other gears in our shop, the custom gear is not flexible but rigid.

Your lens is not on our list, has an unusual focus ring, or you need a different width or thickness than our standard gear. Then we build the matching gear for you.
Just 0.1 mm of diameter decides whether a gear fits well. With the grub screw it is guaranteed to sit tight, and the screw hole does not affect focusing. Without it you take the risk: too tight means sanding it down, too wide means some tape.

All you need is a measuring tape or a caliper. Or send in your lens or drop it off at our office in Augsburg and we take the measurements for you. The video shows every step and how the grub screw system works.
Wrap a flexible measuring tape tightly around the focus ring, exactly where the gear will sit. In the example the outer perimeter is 246 mm. Alternatively measure the outer diameter with a caliper.
In the configurator you choose whether you measured the perimeter or the diameter. We convert it automatically.
We add 0.5 mm for a good fit
10 mm is the standard and works with common follow focus systems. Some lenses have a narrower focus ring, so the gear should be slightly narrower than the focus ring.
Min. 6 mm with grub screw · extra above 20 mm
The thickness is the difference between the inner and outer diameter, so the wall thickness of the gear. We usually make 6 mm, which gives good stiffness.
Standard 6 mm · extra above 10 mm
A difference of just 0.1 mm in diameter decides whether a gear fits well. That is why our custom gears come with 5 grub screws. This way we guarantee a perfect fit, and as the video shows, the holes do not affect focusing.
You can also choose a gear without grub screw at your own risk: if it is too tight you can sand it down, if it is too wide put some tape between gear and lens.

The gear has to slide over the focus ring and still sit firmly. The 0.5 mm gives it that clearance. The configurator shows you right away which inside diameter your gear will be made with.
We recommend it. Just 0.1 mm makes the difference for the fit, and with the 5 grub screws the gear is guaranteed to sit perfectly. For this it must be at least 6 mm wide. Without a grub screw it is at your own risk: if too tight, sand it down, if too wide, some tape helps.
Our gears are made with a high-quality 3D printing process using PLA. Every gear is printed individually for you and engraved with your lens name.
Yes. After adding one you can configure the next gear right away. Each gear appears as its own line in the cart, with its own lens name for the engraving.
The lens name you enter in the configurator, for example “Sigma 18-35mm F1.8”. That way you can keep several gears apart.

Choose “Send in my lens” in the configurator. We measure your lens and make the matching gear. This costs €20.00 net per gear, plus €19.99 once per order for the insured return shipment of your lens. Alternatively you can drop it off in person in Augsburg.
If we made a mistake, we will of course change the gear free of charge. If the mistake is in the measurements provided, just write to us and we will be happy to help.
